to sum up in a sentence or two: I think that this “the concepts of beauty are evil!” stuff is stupid
I find it interesting that Dove feels people should be able to be beautiful and eat their cake too. The entire point of beauty is that very few people can actually be beautiful. If everyone becomes beautiful then the concept itself won't matter. This, for those not keeping up at home, is because beauty is an important social value. You see someone who is beautiful and you instinctively know that they are worthwhile healthy breeding stock and that they play within society’s laws and codes (represented by dress, adornment, etc.) And this statement goes for men and women, just before you ask. Beauty should, by its very nature be something that we strive for and something that very few people attain truly attain. This is what keeps the concept alive, and this is what keeps the concept so virile. It is the model of the faultless human which informed and inspired many of the great works of art like Michelangelo’s David, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s body at his peak, or Wonder Woman. Without the ideal, they would not exist. Humanity loves to marvel and glorify human physical perfection. The problem many groups, like Dove, have with is its discriminatory nature. And, yes, the eternal struggle for beauty does have winners and losers, yes it is discriminatory or at least critical. Some people match the ideal person more than others do. But this is not a bad thing. Beauty as a concept serves us in our interpersonal relations and gives us something to strive for. This perfect physical specimen, this ideal, it doesn’t exist. It is an unquantifiable thing which lives in our minds, we understand it on a subconscious level. And the ideal is rich for people to mine. It should be used for self betterment. In our society, for example, the healthier you are, the generally more attractive you are. Many people go into gyms and take up exercise to look better, this shouldn’t be considered a bad reason for exercise. One of the big “ifs” about the quest for beauty is the question about age. Now, my parents generation, the baby boomers, are aging. This has created some interesting portrayals of attractiveness. Women my mothers age have been being shown as sexy since Sex and The City started, this has been carried on by Desperate Housewives and films like Cat Woman. Cat Woman was an incredibly shit film; there is no question about that. However, Hally Berry made that in her late 30’s, (she is now in her early 40’s,) and Sharon Stone who was also portrayed as very good looking, is obviously, far older than Berry. The same thing can be seen in films starring Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman or Catherine Zeta Jones. Magazines like Woman’s Day, Woman’s Weekly and Cosmopolitan, all refer to these women as young. Why? Because the Baby Boomers still think of themselves as young. The age barrier was something that they, and the people before them constructed, the people who rage against the age barrier are almost certainly aging yuppies themselves. I suspect that that the trend of portraying older women as sex symbols will continue as my parents generation gets older. The age barrier exists with the Yuppies, and as they age that barrier is dying out. Just like their parents, if you get my drift.

If you’ve just stumbled drunkenly across this, I am from the Kapiti Coast of New Zealand and attend Victoria Univeristy. Judging by how well you know NZ, you can tell that funny things happen here all the time! Yep, just last week the supermarket overcharged some guy for milk by fifteen cents! We laughed, and laughed, and then reported Woolworths to the authorities. We take that shit seriously.
